Michael Joseph Soltys

Michael Soltys Obituary

SOLTYS Michael Joseph Born May 15, 1949 ~ December 30, 2023 Aged 74 years.

Michael (Mike) Joseph Soltys was born May 15, 1949 in Roblin, Manitoba to Walter and Mary Soltys, the second child of four. He was raised on the family farm north of Roblin (Merridale) with his older brother Rudolph and sisters Evelyn and Ethel. Throughout his high school days, he worked on neighboring farms as well as the family farm until graduating from Roblin Collegiate. He then started working in construction and other jobs across northern Canada. Always returning to assist his parents on the farm. He eventually stayed to do local work on roads and highways where he met his wife, Marjorie MacKay whom he built his family with. They married in June of 1974, moving to their first home in Roblin, Manitoba. The following April they welcomed their first child Sheldon, and he began his extensive trucking career while farming part time as they had three more children; Shawna, Steven and Sheila.  After a couple of moves for the increasing size of his family they settled in town at his current residence. Mike enjoyed his time being outdoors, attending sporting events, watching movies and fishing with his family where many memories were made. Mike enjoyed the open road in his semi so much that his wife also did her class one to join him on the many trips. He took pride in being able to fix almost anything, spending time at his farm, visiting with his family at the lake, family suppers and barbeques.  When an opportunity arose, Michael and Marjorie opened their restaurant, the Downtown Diner, which they operated for ten years, during which they welcomed the addition of their first grandchild. He returned back to trucking for a few years but after the passing of his wife in 2014, he then retired permanently from truck driving. He got to see his other children get married and become parents and tried to spend time where he could with his children, grandchildren, and other family members. The occasional time in harvest he would assist his son-in-law and daughter in the combine or driving the grain cart. Playing cards, checkers and any type of fishing was his many passions.  Finding retirement too quiet he took on a part-time job delivering parts locally which he enjoyed until his health began to fail him. He spent his final days admitted to hospital in Roblin, then the Palliative Care in Russell until he found peace on Saturday December 30, 2023. Many will remember Mike for his eruptive movie watching where you had a choice to watch the movie or Mike himself, both were entertaining. Fishing memories will be cherished many especially when the bite on the rod was always “it’s a big one!”  before reeling it in.

Left with his memories are his children Shawna (Todd) Eckert, Steven (Sacha) Soltys & Sheila Tremblay; grandchildren Keira and Natassia Eckert, Jaxxon and Justice Tremblay, Sophia and Sam Soltys; brother Rudolph (Veronica) Soltys; sisters Evelyn Levesque and  Ethel (Richard) Raine; Mother-in-law Helen MacKay and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

The family wishes to thank all the Doctors, nurses, aids, therapists, specialists in Russell, Roblin, Dauphin, Brandon, Winnipeg and Regina for their compassion and care for Mike and his family as well as numerous family, friends, neighbors that assisted him and his family over the past year whether it was yard work, visiting, bringing goodies and meals or just checking in on him.

And a thank you to the funeral home and everyone who has assisted in any way including Russell Cut & Dry Flowers, our Minister for our dad’s service, the 50 and over club for the luncheon and if anyone has been missed do know everyone/everything is sincerely appreciated thank you.
