Hazel McGinnis Obituary

McGinnis, Hazel (nee Maguire) Born March 23, 1927 – April 18, 2024 aged 97 years

Hazel Edith (Maguire) McGinnis went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 18, 2024, at the age of 97, in the Roblin & District Health Centre with her family by her side.

Hazel was born on March 23, 1927 in the Silverwood School District, to William and Laura May Maguire.  She grew up on the family farm, took her schooling at the Silverwood School.  She helped on the farm mostly.  She married her childhood sweetheart and best friend, Earle McGinnis, on June 1, 1945 at the Silverwood United Church and together they farmed for 65 years.  They had a family of 7 children:  Bill, Linda, Sandra, Lloyd, Ron, David and Colleen.  Besides working, they had lots of fun times and lots of sad times.

Some of her hobbies were quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, growing flowers, gardening, involved in the church, spending time with friends and family.  Her favorite place was home on the farm and then later in Roblin.

Mom had a love for animals and especially little chicks.  She could tame the wildest critter (like stray cats and dogs) to be so gentle and loving.  She had 3 cats, one at a time of course, and she named them all Pokey.

Mom worked very hard in her lifetime and without modern conveniences for many years.  Carrying water, canning on the old cook stove, carrying chop for the pigs, milking cows for years, hauling and stacking bales, combining with dad, shovelling grain, raising 7 kids with dad.  She got injured many times while working, but she carried on whatever task she was doing.  She had some serious falls over the years and suffered much pain for many years.  Not being able to get up and do a day’s work, even at 97, was annoying to her.  She did not want to be laid up but had things to do and wanted to get them done.

Mom and Dad’s home was always the “gathering place” where so many friends, family and neighbors dropped in for coffee, meal or visit.  Many times they brought missionaries home to stay overnight or for a weekend.  The family Bible was always on the table and many were fed spiritually.  She never stopped telling others about Jesus.  She was a prayer warrior as well.   Highlights of her life were the missionary conferences and how she kept in touch with so many missionaries.  Canada Post was probably happy with all the mail mom sent and received.  Even up to the days before she went into the hospital, she had written a letter.

Surviving to cherish many fond memories are: Linda (Ken) Chase of Roblin, MB;  Sandra McGinnis of Roblin, MB;  Lloyd (Cathy) McGinnis of Roblin, MB;  Ron McGinnis of Lake Wabamun, AB;  David (Linda) McGinnis of Roblin, MB;  Colleen (Dwight) Kroening of St. Albert, AB;  several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sisters Laura Mickelson and Liz Hawryluk of Roblin, MB;  Sadie (Bill) Keast of Yorkton, SK; numerous nieces and nephews;  sisters-in-law Jean Lorch of Roblin, MB and Yvonne (Dave) Bagshaw of Norfolk, England;  brother-in-law Lloyd (Vera Anne) McGinnis of Winnipeg, MB.
