Calvin Ludwig

Calvin Ludwig Obituary

LUDWIG, Calvin James born August 6, 1934 - October 7, 2022 aged 88 years
Calvin Ludwig was born August 6, 1934 in the Zorra district, Saskatchewan, fifth child of Pete and Florence Ludwig. There were 12 children in total – six boys, six girls.
Calvin attended Gartmore School to Grade 8.  He did bush work and worked in the oil fields of Alberta for several years then farmed with his sister Elizabeth and Ralph Cockerill in the Merridale district.
He married Gladys Titanich of Roblin on August 4, 1961 and took over Elizabeth and Ralph’s mixed farm.  To supplement income, he owned and managed a small sawmill until 1968.  Thereafter he worked at other off farm jobs – carpentry, sawyer at other sawmills, assisting John Cockerill on his trapline in the Duck Mountains and eventually trapping the line on his own.
In 1997, Calvin and Gladys purchased an acreage, and a house and garage to put on it.  Calvin travelled the 15km to the farm each day while Gladys travelled 15km to Roblin each day where she worked at Crocus Court Personal Care Home.  Calvin then occupied his time by helping the boys on the farm and in the bush.  He also maintained the acreage and helped Gladys with the garden each year.
Calvin and Gladys had four sons; Warren, Barry, Greg and Wesley.  Their 11 grandchildren and six – plus one on the way – great-grandchildren were Calvin’s pride and joy.
Calvin’s diabetes and health were a challenge to control but he mastered both.  He loved hunting and fishing.  He was always willing to lend a hand if he could, to any one that asked.  Not one to seek attention, Calvin was willing to be a 4-H leader, donate his time to the Keystone Pioneer Museum, and always a member of the Merridale Community Club.
Calvin was predeceased by his parents, Pete and Florence.  Brothers, Raymond, Lyle, Robert; sisters, Barbara, Mavis, Elizabeth, Bernice, and Shirley; daughter-in-law, Kim Ludwig.
Calvin is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Gladys Ludwig; sons, Warren, Barry (Carolyn), Greg (Twyla), Wesley; special nieces “double cousins”, Shannon Ludwig, Melanie (Joe) Murphy; grandchildren, Christopher (Sam) Ludwig, Kyle (Jessie-Leigh) Ludwig, Dakota Robinson, Hayley Flesher, Jenna Ludwig (Tony), Kara (Steven) Becker, Shayla Ludwig, Caitlin (Ryan) Solheim, Carlene (Spencer) Shaw, CJ Ludwig, Callen Ludwig; great-grandchildren, Levi Ludwig, Aleyah Becker, Raeyah Becker, Chelsea Goraluk, Lawson Solheim, Jesse Solheim; brothers, Harvey (Jane), Peter “Bud” (Gloria), sister, Lois Elaine; brothers-in-law, Russell (Amy) Titanich, John (Sandra) Titanich; sister-in-law, Alice (Gil) Anderson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
